With the names of people touched by cancer written on the back of her neon-pink-and-black cycling shirt, Christen Zimmerman cruised out of Columbus on Saturday morning, one of more than 8,000 riders in the annual Pelotonia fundraiser for cancer research.
“Why wouldn’t we be out here?” said Zimmerman, 31, riding in her second Pelotonia alongside friends and coworkers in the L Brands peloton. “I have too many names on the back of my shirt to not be.”
The names of grandmothers, teachers, aunts and friends adorned the back of her jersey — 14 in all.
She and the other cyclists rode through the crisp morning air on routes of various lengths. The charity raises money for researchers at Ohio State University — more than $14.8 million pledged for this year’s ride.
Leading up to the 9 a.m. start time for the 25- and 45-mile rides, the Arena District played host to the thousands of riders, volunteers and supporters gearing up for the event.
