A Franklinton project that’s part of a Downtown recreational trail is nearing completion with the construction of a pedestrian bridge over the Scioto River.

The Columbus Recreation and Parks Department is working on the Franklinton/Souder Avenue trail connector, a $6 million project that will complete the Scioto Trail loop, spanning 3.5 miles around the Scioto Mile. A 420-foot pedestrian bridge — which makes up $3.7 million of the project’s cost — will be built as part of the project.

“This project started years ago as a way of connecting the Franklinton community to Downtown and the Arena District,” planning manager Brad Westall said. “Right now, it’s very difficult to get there if you’re walking or biking.”

The pedestrian bridge is expected to open in July.
